Guidelines on how to answer KCSE essays and excerpt questions
The Samaritan is a compulsory play set text in the Kenyan secondary
schools. It is examined in the KCSE. There are two types of questions set
from this text. Namely;
i. Context questions commonly referred to as excerpt or extract
questions.
ii. Essay questions
1. Context questions
The extract/ excerpt questions are set in paper two.
This question requires the learner to read the given excerpt from
the given text well so that the learner can respond appropriately to
questions from the extract. Questions can be from the various literary
aspects; the plot, thematic concerns, character and characterization,
stylistic devices as well as grammar and vocabulary.
a. Question on the learner’s understanding of the plot
- This type of question requires the learner to place the excerpt
in its immediate context. That means the learner is supposed
to give an account of the events that unfold immediately
before and after the given excerpt.
- The learner may also be required to recount events which
happen somewhere else in the text but closely related to the
happenings in the excerpt.
b. Questions on thematic concerns that are highlighted in the
excerpt.
- Here the learner is expected to identify, illustrated and
explain themes that are highlighted in the excerpt. The
identification and illustration should be confined in the
extract and not from the entire text.
